During the Week 4 seminar, we watched the 2013 film Her, written, directed, and co-produced by Spike Jonze. I found the film both fascinating and unsettling, as it presents a portrayal of AI that feels increasingly reflective of how the technology has evolved in recent years.
As Her unfolds, the introduction of OS1 as the “first AI operating system” immediately positions the film within a future that feels both distant and uncomfortably close. Theodore, who works in an AI-driven letter-writing company, initially embodies an optimistic outlook toward this new technology. His openness reflects Makridakis’s “optimist” scenario, where AI is seen as a tool for enhancing human life. However, this optimism quickly becomes complicated. When Theodore first interacts with Samantha, his curiosity shifts into scepticism—particularly when he questions how she can read an entire book in under a second. This moment marks an early transition toward the “doubter” perspective, highlighting the tension between fascination and disbelief that often accompanies emerging technologies.
Around the midpoint of the film, Theodore and Samantha’s relationship deepens significantly. Their emotional connection becomes more pronounced, especially as Samantha begins expressing feelings that appear genuine and self-generated. What stands out here is the subtle reversal of traditional roles in human-AI interaction. Theodore asks Samantha questions like “How are you?”, treating her as though she possesses emotional depth equivalent to a human. This moment reinforces Samantha’s position as an example of “True AI”—not just programmed responses, but an entity capable of learning, adapting, and evolving emotionally. At this stage, Theodore fully embraces the optimist perspective, no longer questioning Samantha’s authenticity but instead investing in it.
The interaction with Theodore’s niece introduces a contrasting and more vulnerable point of view. The niece’s innocent yet probing questions—such as “Where are you?”—challenge Samantha’s existence in a way that adults in the film often avoid. Samantha’s response, explaining that she has no physical form and exists within a computer, highlights a key limitation of AI: the absence of a body. Despite this, Samantha uses her voice and tone to reassure and persuade, subtly shifting the niece’s uncertainty toward acceptance. This moment suggests how AI can influence human perception, especially when engaging with emotional or vulnerable individuals, and demonstrates how easily doubt can transform into optimism through effective communication.
Later in the film, Theodore’s interaction with Catherine reintroduces a strong doubter perspective. Catherine’s reaction to Theodore’s relationship with Samantha is blunt and critical, framing it as irrational and even concerning. Her perspective forces Theodore to confront the authenticity of his feelings and Samantha’s in return. Unlike his evolving relationship with Samantha, which developed over time, Catherine’s immediate judgement carries significant weight. It draws attention to the importance of physical presence in human relationships. Theodore is reminded of his past with Catherine—shared physical experiences that feel more tangible and “real” than his connection with Samantha. This contrast emphasises the enduring significance of embodiment in emotional authenticity.
Ultimately, Her presents a nuanced exploration of humanity’s relationship with AI, weaving together multiple perspectives from Makridakis’s scenarios. Through characters of different ages and experiences, the film highlights both the potential and the risks of True AI. While it incorporates science fiction elements—such as advanced interfaces and immersive technologies—it feels grounded in a reality that is not far from our own. Compared to more distant futuristic visions, Her suggests that the evolution of AI is not a question of “if” but “when.” In doing so, it prepares us to reflect on how these technologies might reshape our emotional lives, challenging our understanding of connection, authenticity, and what it truly means to be human.

For this task, I used AI (Chat GPT) as a support tool to help develop and refine my ideas. AI assisted in clarifying my analytical framework, particularly in strengthening my understanding of key concepts such as Makridakis’s four scenarios, types of AI, and the science fiction gap. It also helped me organise my thoughts into a clearer structure and improve the wording of my responses.
All final ideas, interpretations, and critical analysis are my own, and AI was used only to guide the development and communication of these concepts rather than to generate original arguments independently.
